3D Printingfor Architectural Models

The ability of architects to present the quality of their work in the most realistic and detailed light as possible is becoming increasingly important. Architectural models from the 3D printer are the first choice for this, as shown by a project for a social center in Ghana and the European Parliament art project.

In fact, Binder Jetting 3D printing is perfect for presentations of this kind. With the new Polypor Type C binder, pure white models can now be printed to meet the highest standards of appearance. This makes Binder Jetting 3D printing even more attractive, especially for architectural models and design mock up’s.

After a heavy tropical storm had destroyed a public building, the Catholic diocese made  the decision to build a new social centre. This  trend-setting project was planned and designed by Wieland Schmidt. Of course everyone in Ghana was curious as to what the new building complex would look like in detail. Therefore Wieland Schmidt decided to digitalise the building data and print out the entire social centre at the voxeljet service centre.

The architectural model of the social centre was printed with a richness of detail and precision that is the hallmark of voxeljet quality. Also, the excellent mechanical stability of the 3D prints ensured that the model withstood the long journey from Augsburg to Ghana without any damages.

New freedoms for architects and artists

The extent to which architects, artists and sculptors can benefit from the possibilities of 3D printing is demonstrated by the EUROPE project of Professor Dr. Tomasz Matusewicz. With EUROPE the Polish academic, who has also made a name for himself as an artist, focuses on the issue of identity, which constantly recurs in his work. The idea behind this work of art is to create in the Internet a virtual symbolic place that unites Europeans irrespective of their multi-nationality.

Thanks to the capabilities of 3D printing, the project has been able to take tangible shape, at least in model scale. The plastic model generated by an industrial 3d printer VX1000 shows EUROPE exactly as the artist conceived it. The model has come up with great richness of detail and high precision. The 3D printing was able to convince Dr. Matusewicz in terms of the spatial representation and the aesthetic proportions of his work. Moreover, the plastic model is ideally suited for presentation purposes.

The technology of three-dimensional printing allows certain projects to become reality that were previously very difficult or even impossible to complete. It brings new freedoms to architects and artists, but also to many students at colleges and universities.
